Mrs. Rebekah West, Principal
Gearing up for the new 2013-2014 school year to be an exciting, productive year to increase student achievement! For the 2012-2013 school year, our K-6 elementary school was named an Achieving School by the Arkansas Department of Education for academic performance in literacy and mathematics. Teachers, paraprofessionals and students were highly commended for their academic achievement. The ADE informed the administrators this summer that school status for Arkansas public schools would not be available until November.
Your student’s individual standardized test report will be sent home on August 27, 2013. These reports are not always the easiest for parents to read and understand. If you have any questions regarding your child’s scores, please contact the elementary office at 870-924-4578 to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Thompson.
At Junction City Elementary, we truly want to make a difference for every child by providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum that challenges each child to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to providing intense intervention for struggling students that need extra help in literacy and math. In addition, enrichment will be provided to those students who need the extra challenge. Character education is an additional component to the overall literacy, math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, digital learning, and library curriculum.
New faces will be seen on the elementary campus this school year! The Board has hired five elementary teachers. In addition, we will have a part-time Dean of Students. First, Miss Aimee Allgood is teaching first grade. Second, Sarah Simmons is teaching fourth grade literacy and social studies. Next, Mrs. Kimberly Newcomb is teaching 5/6 language arts (grammar and writing) and social studies. In addition, Veronica Davis is teaching 5/6 reading and spelling. Jessica Huskey is teaching 5/6 mathematics. Coach Henry Harrell will be the part-time K-6 Dean of Students responsible for student discipline. Please join us in welcoming these new educators to our school.
The elementary campus looks great! Improvements have been made to enhance our facilities, thus making the atmosphere for learning more inviting. I would like to extend a special thanks to the summer maintenance crew for a job well done on cleaning the grounds, cleaning the facilities, moving equipment, repairing equipment, updating classrooms and painting.
Students today are digital natives. Technology is crucial in preparing today’s children for the future. The kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms, gifted and talented, art, music and media center have interactive whiteboards to enhance learning for our students. In addition, an i-pad mobile lab will continue to be utilized this year. I-pods, pod-casting with flip cameras and web-based programs are other examples of how teachers plan to infuse technology in the classrooms to engage students in learning.
The fall calendar is filling up quickly with activities and events. Calendars will be sent home in the Dragon envelope one Tuesday a month. Soon, we will announce our first Top Dragons of the year at the October School Board meeting! In addition, please be sure to complete, sign and return all of the requested documents in the student packets that students will receive at the open house or on the first day of school no later than August 26, 2013.
Parental involvement is a crucial component of a child’s academic success. At Junction City Elementary, we welcome parents on our campus. Be sure to stop by and sign in at the elementary office first. If you would like to be more involved, contact Shanna McLelland at (870) 924-4564.
As always, I look forward to working with each of you as partners in your child’s education. To schedule an appointment to conference with teachers and/or the principal, contact the elementary office at 870-924-4578. Together, we can make this the best year ever for our kids!
